Objective
By accomplishing the Bachelor’s degree in Public Health Nursing you will also qualify as a registered nurse. Both nurses and public health nurses work with and for the benefit of the public. In practice, nurses work to promote and maintain health, prevent and treat illness, and alleviate suffering. This degree trains and prepares professionals for working independently in expert roles within the field of healthcare. As a public health nurse, you will promote the health of the individual, community and population in your role as expert in public health and health promotion. As a nurse, you can plan, implement, and evaluate patient care together with patients, their families, and the community. In addition, you will advise and guide patients, know how to make informed decisions, solve different issues and take responsibility for your own work. You will also be able to work as a team-leader. Today, the healthcare environment is increasingly international, and you will be able to work with patients from different cultures.
The overall objective of the degree is to train competent healthcare professionals who, as experts in multi-professional cooperation, will provide the public with services that are equal to all and safe. Public health nursing competence is based on a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, cumulatively renewed and reviewed knowledge base, practical know-how and social skills.
Content of the degree
The degree combines theory and practice, in turn. The Bachelor of Healthcare degree Nurse / Public Health Nurse (AMK, University of Applied Sciences Bachelor’s degree) includes 60 credits of practical training. Part of the training occurs in different nursing environments at home or abroad and other parts are carried out under supervision at the university of applied sciences. The unique learning environments of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, the Käteva (‘Handy’) home that demonstrates services helping the elderly and disabled people to cope at home, methods of health and exercise service production for different customer groups, and nursing simulation facilities are in place to support your studies. The simulation environment includes a doll that responds to treatment as a human being would in real life.
In addition to the above, the Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare (Public Health Nurse) also includes 60 credits of advanced studies in public health care, of which 30 credits involve practical training in related work such as maternity and child care clinics, occupational health care, public health and work with the elderly.
Structure of the studies
The degree is worth 240 credits and it takes about 4 years to complete it. One credit corresponds to approximately 27 hours of work by the student according to the international ECTS. The studies consist of basic studies (30 cr), professional studies (135 cr), advanced studies (60 cr) and a thesis (15 cr) and development work included in the professional studies of public health nurses (5 cr). The degree includes (90 cr) of practical training to develop professional competence, which are carried out in both work environments and supervised lessons.
