Objective
The student:
Masters the essential knowledge base of patient / client safety.
Understands the key concepts of patient / client safety and how to promote patient safety and prevent incidents at all stages of the patient care process.
Can follow occupational safety guidelines.
Knowledge of the principles of patient transfers and assistance in patient ambulation, and the ability to carry out patient transfers taking into account the patient's resources and patient safety.
Recognises the risks involved in assisting patient transfers and is able to apply safe transfer techniques using the most common patient transfer aids. Has knowledge and recognition of the physical stress factors in nursing and understands the importance of ergonomics in promoting smooth and safe working practices.
Knowledge of the principles of infection control (standard precautions) and ability to apply this knowledge when carrying out infection control.
Content
The areas of patient safety: equipment safety, care safety, safety of care methods, drug safety, and medication safety.
