Annual Themes – Study Progress Description

1st yr Nursing orientation.
Students examine and become familiar with the fundamentals of nursing and understand the significance of multidisciplinary knowledge as the basis of professional expertise.

2nd yr Clinical nursing expert.
Under supervision, the students are able to plan, implement and assess a customer’s/patient’s overall care together with the customer/patient and his/her next-of-kin according to nursing values and principles. Students expand the multidisciplinary knowledge base required in nursing.

3rd yr Applies nursing / public health nursing.
Students operate using a developmental approach in their evidence based nursing and public health nursing work with individuals, families, groups and communities.

4th yr Nursing/public health nursing developer.
The students found their professional decision-making on a multidisciplinary knowledge base and can develop evidence based nursing and public health nursing. They understand their responsibility to develop themselves and their field of work in both multi-professional and multi-field communities. Students can use local-decision making channels of engagement to promote health.

General

The Degree in Nursing and Public Health Nursing leads to a Health Care and Social Sciences University of Applied Sciences Bachelor’s degree qualification. The degree in Nursing consists of 210 credits and the degree in Public Health Nursing, 240 credits. The degree takes 3.5 - 4 years to complete. The studies consist of basic and professional studies, practical training to advance professional expertise, a thesis, a maturity test and free-choice studies.

The Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care and Social Sciences is governed by the law (932/2014), Decree (1129/2014) concerning studies at a University of Applied Sciences. To ensure the right to practice a profession the degree fulfils the requirements of the decrees set out in § 3 of the Kajaani University of Applied Sciences Degree Regulations as well as the requirements of the Act (559 /94) concerning healthcare professionals and the decree (564/94)2005/36/EC and 2013/55/EU.

Upon completion of professional education, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) grants, by application, nurses and public health nurses the right to practice as a licensed health care professional and the right to use the professional title of Registered Nurse (UAS) or Registered Nurse and Public Health Nurse (UAS) both of which are regulated by law. The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health maintains a central register of healthcare professionals in order to fulfil its supervisory obligations.

Generic Working Life Skills or Competences

The syllabus of the Nursing and Public Health Nursing degree is based on nationally defined and approved professional areas of expertise i.e. competences. There are generic competences common to all university of applied sciences degrees (Arene ry.) and competences that are specific to the Nursing and Public Health Nursing degree.
