Communication and multi-professionalism, patient and client safety, information technology and record keeping:
The student is able to report and record appropriately the care of surgical patients, taking into account safety and continuity of care.
Has the ability to report and record patient care in a patient-safe manner and to prevent complications and adverse events at different stages of the surgical patient care process.
Has knowledge regarding the multidisciplinary network appropriate to the patient's needs.
Can communicate with the patient and his/her relatives and within the working community to promote patient safety.

Social and health care service system, management and workforce competences, quality assurance, entrepreneurship and development:
The student understands roles of the different departments and service units as part of the care and service chain for the surgical patient.
Has knowledge of the various services and functions of the service and the service provider in the field of medical and surgical care, including the various aspects of the service and the service provider's role in the management of the service and the patient's care.

Clinical nursing, guidance and teaching skills, as well as self-care support, health and functional capacity promotion:
The student has ability to plan, implement and evaluate client-oriented nursing care and supervision of surgical patients.
Can plan, implement and conduct evidence-based practice, research and decision making:
Can use evidence-based knowledge in nursing decision making.

Pass
- The student is guided by the values and principles of nursing and is able to describe his/her actions in accordance with them by giving examples.
- The student's actions reflect the legal basis of nursing.
- The student's actions are guided by a client-centred approach at different stages of the nursing process.
- The student has selected and adapted his/her personal learning objectives to suit the unit and patient group concerned.
- The student reflects on the development of his/her competence in relation to the personal learning objectives and assessment criteria.
- The student's reflective self-assessment is based on evidence-based knowledge.

Fail
- The student's performance is aimless and inappropriate.
- The student repeatedly violates the values, principles and legislation of the placement.
- The student treats patients in an unprofessional manner.
- The student's written personal objectives are absent or not taken into account in his/her activities.
- The student's written and/or oral self-assessment is limited, declarative or unrealistic and the student does not complete the self-assessment when requested.

- The student's actions are conducive to patient safety at all stages of the patient care process.

Fail
- The student repeatedly fails to follow the guidelines for recording and reporting nursing care in the work unit.
- The student repeatedly compromises patient safety, there are several near misses.
- Fails to recognise the multidisciplinary network that the patient needs.
- Student's communication is consistently deficient and compromises patient safety.


Social and health care service delivery system, leadership and workforce competencies, quality assurance, and entrepreneurship and development:
Pass
- Provides examples of the roles of operational and service units in the care and service chain of the surgical patient.
- The student will work collegially within a work community to achieve a common goal.

Fail
- The student's knowledge of the surgical patient care and service chain is completely lacking.
- The student does not follow instructions, behaves inappropriately in the work community and repeatedly neglects agreed tasks.


Clinical nursing, guidance and teaching skills and support for self-care, promotion of health and functional capacity:
Pass
- The student works under supervision in accordance with the nursing process.
- The principles of infection control are reflected in the student's practice.
- The student is guided in the administration of drugs and fluids to the surgical patient, aware of the student's responsibilities and duties.
- Assesses and manages pain in the surgical patient and evaluates the effectiveness of pain management in a guided manner.
- The student will observe and assess vital signs and respond to any changes.

Fail
- Steps in the nursing process are repeatedly ignored despite feedback.
- The student does not follow the principles of infection control including standard precautions and hand hygiene.
- Deliberately or repeatedly compromises the safe administration of medication to patients.
- Repeatedly ignores the patient's pain.
- Fails to assess and monitor vital signs and to recognise changes that compromise vital signs.

Evidence-based practice, use of research evidence and decision making:
Pass
- The student will use evidence-based knowledge to inform decision making at different stages of the patient care process.

Fail
- Evidence-based knowledge is not fully utilised in both nursing practice and self-assessment.
