Objective

The student:
• Understands the essential principles and key concepts of patient /client safety, can promote safety, prevent incidents, and effectively respond when safety is compromised.
• Uses appropriate transfer techniques and common patient handling aids safely.
• Understands the principles of infection prevention and applies them effectively in nursing care.
• Follows occupational safety guidelines and works according to safe and ergonomic principles.
• Understands the principles of safe patient transfers and mobility assistance and performs them by considering the patient's resources and overall safety.
• Recognises physical and psychological strain in nursing work and uses ergonomic and de-escalation practices to maintain safe and effective care.
• Understands the basic principles of radiation safety
• Understands fire safety principles and knows how to act appropriately in case of a fire or emergency situation.

Content

• Areas of patient safety: equipment safety, care safety, safety of care methods, drug safety, and medication safety.
• Patient safety culture and incident reporting practices
• Effective communication: nurse–patient, nurse–nurse, team communication, and documentation
• Wellbeing at work and methods to support it
• Safe and ergonomic patient transfers and occupational ergonomics
• Infection prevention and control
• Prevention and management of challenging or threatening behaviour
• Radiation safety
• Fire safety

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Pass
The student consistently demonstrates the ability to:

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding to explain essential principles and key concepts of patient/client safety.
Identify potential risks and describe appropriate measures to promote safety, prevent incidents, and respond effectively when safety is compromised.
Perform safe patient transfers and mobility assistance, using appropriate techniques and aids, while considering the patient’s resources and overall safety.
Apply infection prevention and control measures correctly in nursing care situations.
Follow occupational safety guidelines, applying safe and ergonomic principles during all nursing activities.
Demonstrate basic radiation safety practices relevant to nursing.
Act appropriately in fire and emergency situations according to established procedures.
Recognise and manage physical and psychological strain in nursing work, applying ergonomic and de-escalation strategies as appropriate.
Contribute to a positive patient safety culture, including proper incident reporting when required.
Justify actions and decisions based on professional ethics, patient safety principles, and relevant guidelines.

Fail
The student demonstrates one or more of the following:
Inability to explain or apply the essential principles and key concepts of patient/client safety.
Unsafe or incorrect use of patient transfer techniques, mobility aids, or ergonomic principles, creating a risk to patient or personal safety.
Failure to apply infection prevention and control measures correctly.
Disregard for occupational safety guidelines, resulting in unsafe practices.
Inability to respond appropriately in fire/emergency situations.
Poor or unclear communication with patients, colleagues, or the care team, and/or inaccurate or incomplete documentation.
Lack of recognition or management of physical or psychological strain, leading to unsafe or ineffective care.
Failure to contribute to patient safety culture or to follow incident reporting procedures when required.
Actions or decisions that contradict professional ethics or established safety principles.
