Objective

Students will understand the treatment process of acutely and non-acutely ill medical and surgical patients while being able to apply knowledge of different disciplines in the nursing decision-making process.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The students are able to use medical and/or surgical nursing concepts expertly in a variety of situations and to connect them. They know how to analyse, compare, combine and select information being able to present alternative practices in medical-surgical nursing. They can select and critically assess medical-surgical nursing techniques and models and use them in their work. The students are able to work independently and flexibly in every type of medical and surgical nursing learning and operational environment. They adopt and use a goal-oriented and developmental approach in their work as nurses. The students are able to work as a member of a multi-professional team promoting and developing the work of the team. They critically apply professional ethical nursing principles in their work.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The students are able to systematically use the concepts of medical and surgical nursing being able to describe and provide reasons for basic knowledge concerning medical-surgical nursing. They know how to select appropriate medical-surgical nursing procedures with the aid of their acquired knowledge and instructions. The students are proficient in applying appropriate medical and surgical nursing techniques and models and they can work independently and responsibly in various roles in the medical-surgical nursing learning and operational environment. They can work as a member of team to achieve the team's common goal and their work is customer oriented. The students are able to justify their work according to the professional ethical principles of nursing and reflect upon their own abilities and medical-surgical nursing practices.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The students are able to use the fundamental/individual concepts of medical and/or medical and surgical nursing and can name and iterate basic medical-surgical nursing knowledge. They are able to work in an appropriate manner when nursing a medical-surgical patient, using the correct techniques and models. The students can work as a member of a team taking other members of the team into consideration. They are able to take customers into account and their work is professional and complies with the professional ethical principles of nursing. They are able to assess their own abilities and medical-surgical nursing procedures.
