Objective
Students will know the risks affecting premature birth and can assess and care for a premature baby taking into account the features associated with a premature child's growth and development. They will examine and analyse the ethical issues associated with the care of premature babies. Students will apply the principles of family centredness to support and help the families of prematurely born babies and also their previously acquired knowledge base in developing and supporting the parent-child bond.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The students are able to assess the risks that could threaten the development of good parenthood. They know how to use and apply acquired knowledge and skills to the planning, implementation and assessment of nursing premature babies. Assessment criteria, good (3)
The students are able to explain the significance of nursing interventions used for premature babies in terms of safeguarding the growth and development of such babies. They are aware of the factors threatening parenthood when a baby is born prematurely and find ways to support it.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The students can give reasons for premature birth. They know the main features of the growth and development of a prematurely born child. They can recognise the special characteristics of nursing prematurely born children and family nursing and can name the values and principles of paediatric nursing.
