Objective

Students will be able to define the ergonomic principles guiding the transfer/movement of patients and can work according to these principles. They will recognise and be able to use the most common auxiliary equipment for moving patients. They will also recognise the risks involved in assisting patients to move and moving patients in their own work and in the work community and will have the competence in the operations of the work community to promote ergonomics and occupational well-being. Students will know the laws and regulations guiding occupational safety in nursing and will be able to examine and develop their work accordingly. During this course students will accomplish the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health's patient transfer ergonomics certificate (card).

The challenges of occupational safety and ergonomics in nursing.
Body control and natural movement models as the approach to ergonomic activities
Taking into account the strengths of the patient when assisting him/her to move
Auxiliary devices used in patient transfer
Occupational safety in nursing laws and regulations
