Objective

Students will know the concept, aims and operational environment of gerontological nursing as well as the special features associated with the elderly. They will recognise the ethical principles of gerontological nursing and dealing with the elderly. They know how to support the physical and mental capabilities of the elderly.

The gerontological nursing concept, its aims, operational environments and ethical questions
Physical, psychological and social aging
The special features of and dealing with the elderly in nursing
Promoting the health and well-being of the elderly and supporting their physical and mental capacity.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The students use the patient's/customers’ own physical and mental resources in customer-oriented nursing. They can apply actions and thought affecting patient safety in their work. They can present social and health care services supporting the patients' own physical and mental resources. They are able to justify their work according to professional ethical principles. The students can plan and implement nursing interventions supporting the physical and mental resources of their patients in a customer-oriented manner.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students are able to support the physical and mental resources of their customers/patients. They can explain factors affecting patient safety, providing examples of the significance of social and health care services in supporting the physical and mental resources of customers/patients. They know how to work according to professional ethical principles when dealing with the elderly. The students are able to plan and implement nursing interventions supporting the customers'/patients' physical and mental resources with some supervision.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students can recognise the physical and mental resources of their patients/customers and can name factors affecting patient safety as well as social and health care services supporting the physical and mental resources of their customers. They are able to treat the elderly with dignity and respect. The students can plan and implement nursing interventions supporting the physical and mental resources of their customers under supervision.
