Objective
The student gets information about the global development of mining operations. The student understands the regional and social significance of the mining industry and can assess how different mines affect the communities surrounding them. The student knows the life cycle of mining operations, from ore exploration to production and further to mine closure.
Content
Mining in Finland and the world.
Basic knowledge of geology and minerals.
Social importance of mining, metals and minerals.
The impact of the mine on the surrounding community.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The limit of an approved performance is 70% of the maximum points.
Execution methods
Teaching is face-to-face teaching. Participating in the teaching is possible via remote connection according to the schedule. Recorded lectures are available throughout the academic year. Visiting lecturers where possible.
Final exam and/or course thesis.
Accomplishment methods
The course includes lectures and various exercises. The teaching is mainly organized as face-to-face teaching, in which it is also possible to participate remotely. Passing the course requires the completion of both practice assignments and the final exam. The course requires 108 hours of student work.
