Objective

The aim is to ensure that a graduating nurse possesses the core competencies required of a registered nurse in general nursing (180 ECTS).

Content

The course includes the national final examination for general nursing.
The exam consists of theoretical questions (100 items) and medication calculations (5 items). The content of the exam is based on the competency requirements for a registered nurse in general nursing (180 ECTS).

The theoretical exam includes a total of 100 questions covering the following registered nurse competency areas:
1. Professionalism and ethics
2. Client and patient centred care
3. Client and patient safety
4. Promotion of wellbeing and health
5. Information technology and documentation
6. Clinical nursing
7. Quality assurance
8. Evidence based decision-making and development in nursing
9. Guidance and support for self-care
10. Social and health care service system
11. Working life skills, leadership, and entrepreneurship
12. Interaction and communication competence

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Assessment
• Theoretical exam:
• Pass: at least 65 points, i.e., 65% of the maximum score (100 points)
• Fail: fewer than 65 points
• The theoretical exam includes statements, multiple choice questions, fill in the blank tasks, matching tasks, and case-based questions.
• Medication calculation exam:
• Pass: 5/5 points (all calculations must be correct)
• Fail: fewer than 5 points

Further information

Prerequisites
The student must have completed 160 ECTS credits.
The learning material consists of the contents of the courses preceding the advanced studies according to the curriculum.

Accomplishment methods

Theoretical exam:
• Pass: at least 65 points, i.e., 65% of the maximum score (100 points)
• Fail: fewer than 65 points
• The theoretical exam includes statements, multiple choice questions, fill in the blank tasks, matching tasks, and case-based questions.

Medication calculation exam:
• Pass: 5/5 points (all calculations must be correct)
• Fail: fewer than 5 points

The student has 3 hours to complete both exams and three exam attempts during the semester.

The exam is part of the advanced professional studies. For nursing students, the exam is included as a partial assessment of general nursing competence and as part of the optional advanced studies (30 ECTS). A successfully completed national general nursing medication calculation exam replaces the medication calculation exam 4 in the advanced studies.
