Objective

After completing the course, the student is able to: - understand the concept, structure and crises related to biodiversity deeper, multidisciplinary and in practise - recognize reasons for the ongoing biodiversity crisis and its consequences to the human society and personal life - explore own connection to nature and diverse values you assign to it - recognize a variety of approaches and tools to protect biodiversity, increase biodiversity and promote sustainable use of biodiversity - apply the issues to own field of studies/work and learn how to be part of the solution The study unit develops the following generic skills/generic competences: digitalization, ethics, internationality, sustainability and responsibility, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication.

Content

The course deepens understanding about biodiversity, gives examples from nature and biodiversity conservation and maintenance, provides group working skills and critical thinking as well as opportunities for sharing knowledge and networking.

Further information

This course belongs to the open courses within the Biodiversity education network and Climate University and is available for the students in the participating universities. Campus: Online teaching Further information: Instruction in English. Time: Autumn semester (English), Spring (Finnish). In the academic year 2026-2027 English-language implementation only in the spring semester together with Finnish-language implementation. Target group: Master level students from different study backgrounds (interdisciplinary course).

Can also be done online.

Accomplishment methods

Distance learning. There will be online lectures/ info sessions (Kick off meeting/grouping, Final seminar) and group working. Each group decides the timetable for their own group working. Work load 81 hours. Grading pass-fail. Active participation in the group work and the final seminar.
