Objective

The students will learn to actively use written and spoken English situations demanded of their subject specialism and working life.

Content

Formal and informal style.
Documentation.
Discussion and / or oral presentation on a topic related to current subject specialism.
Description of project work and presentation of the results verbally and in writing.
The coursework is integrated, where applicable, into the students' major subject courses

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The students are fluent in topics related to their professional field. They respond quickly and appropriately. The students communicate in a suitable style. The students write fluently and use versatile structures that are error-free. The students speak naturally and articulate clearly. They understand both the main points and the details of demanding professional texts and are able to describe and explain what they have read to others. The students understand and use the terms of their discipline with skill and accuracy and they know how to search for information from different sources.

The students are quite fluent in topics related to their professional field. They respond appropriately in most communication situations. The students mostly communicate in a suitable style. The students write quite fluently and clearly. The students speak naturally and articulate clearly enough. They understand both the main points and most of the details of demanding professional texts and are able to describe and explain what they have read to others relatively well. The students understand and use the terms of their discipline fairly accurately and they know how to search for information from different sources. They are able to use grammar structures quite accurately and can self-correct possible misunderstandings caused by imprecise expression.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The students can cope with simple discussion situations. They usually respond in some way. The students are somewhat aware of the style requirements set by different types of texts. The students write iso that their texts can be understood by others. The students understand the mainstream of normal speech in a familiar context. The students speak understandably but their articulation is often unclear. The students are able to use the basic terminology of their discipline so that the essential message is transmitted. The students use the easiest sources available. They use simple structures and when using more complex structures, they make many errors.
