Objective

Students will have knowledge of Finland's soil development, the properties of different soil layers and how to create foundations for buildings and yards and gardens, frost protection and drainage.

Soil types and their geotechnical properties
Ground surveys
Methods of creating foundations for buildings, yards and gardens
Foundation damage and repairing old foundations
Radon protection
Frost protection
Draining the building ground
Reinforcing the building ground
Clearing, protecting and excavating the building location.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The students are able to plan moisture insulation and drainage for foundations at a building site. They are able to take hazardous materials present in the soil into account while constructing foundations and they are proficient in foundation building quality control procedures.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The students are familiar with the methods and stages of building foundations. They are able to plan and dimension frost protection for foundations.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The students know how the terrain and soil has developed. They recognise methods of creating foundations in house construction and are able to assess the suitability of different types of soil as a building base.
