Content scheduling

Find the lecture sessions in your timetable. The project will take place on 5 and 6 September 2025. A detailed course progression plan will be uploaded to Reppu.

Objective

Students will be able to define and focus on the tourism programme service sector, seeing it as part of the tourism cluster. They will recognise nature tourism programme services (main summer activities: hiking, nordic walking, cycling, riding, wildlife, canoeing and fishing; main winter activities: skiing, snowshoeing, winter fishing), sports tourism (active and passive), culture tourism (recreational resources that culture offers) and well-being tourism (well-being tourism within the sphere of health tourism). Students will be able to define and describe the special features of nature, sports, culture and well-being tourism programme services, as well as being able to determine which of the above activity's forms of programme services and products are specifically suitable for Kainuu and Koillismaa. They will be proficient in listing the compulsory elements of a product card and in compiling a product card.

Location and time

The course is delivered as contact teaching during the autumn semester according to the timetable.

Materials

Material will be provided during classes and in Reppu.

Teaching methods

The course consists of compulsory lectures for all students, accompanied by independent individual learning assignments and group work with presentations. These assignments help you practice and demonstrate mastering and understanding of the key course content. The course also includes a group project worth approximately 0,5 ECTS (about 14 hours of work). The project is evaluated on a pass or fail basis and is part of the course completion requirements.
The course ends with an exam and is evaluated numerically based on all partial achievements.

The compulsory project hours will be earned during voluntary work at Kainuun Liikunta's Lost in Kainuu event.

Student workload

The course requires approximately 82 hours of student work. Lectures account for ca. 20 hours, project work for ca. 17 hours and the remaining 45 hours are allocated to the assessed individual and group work. These amounts are indicative.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The students are able to list the different parts of the tourism programme services industry cluster. They can classify the main summer activities of nature tourism (rambling, Nordic walking, cycling, riding, wildlife, canoeing and fishing); the main winter activities (skiing, snowshoeing, winter fishing); the main programme services of sports tourism (active and passive), adventure tourism (different levels of adventure), culture tourism (the physical and mental resources offered by culture), and wellbeing tourism (wellbeing tourism in the field of health tourism). The students are able to list the compulsory contents of the product card.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The students are able to define and explain the limits of the programme service industry They are able to define the special features of nature, exercise, culture and wellbeing tourism programme services. They are able to compile a product card (description).

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The students are able to understand and explain how the programme service industry is connected with the tourism cluster. They are able to define which forms of nature, exercise, culture and wellbeing tourism programme services and products are suitable to Kainuu and Koillismaa (Northeast Finland). They are able to connect the product card (description) to form a part of the product development process.
