Objective

Students will deepen their knowledge of and competence in sports, exercise and leisure operations and coaching. They will be able to develop their work and operational environment using research based knowledge.

Content

A 12-week practical training period in relevant companies or public institutions and associations/clubs (in Finland or abroad)

Location and time

Autumn semester 2026.

Materials

The process, tasks and reporting is described in the KAMK intranet / Practical training.

Teaching methods

The student will independently carry out the practical training and complete the related documents.
A practical training supervising teacher will be appointed to the student.

Employer connections

The practical training is completed in an sports and leisure industry organization that is either a public, private or non-profit sector organization (in Finland or abroad).

The student must apply for a practical training place themselves. The tutoring teacher approves the practical training place. A contract will be signed with the practical training place.

International connections

The student can complete the practical training abroad. The student should start planning the international internship in good time, at least six months before you hope to accomplish your training.

Completion alternatives

The advanced practical training can be brought forward under the following conditions:

- The student has succeeded in their studies.
- The student has experience in leisure time sports instruction, coaching or development tasks during their studies at KAMK.
- The internship supports professional goals and employment.
- The student has shown a good attitude, responsibility and co-operation skills in their studies.

Note that the advanced training may not be started directly after the orientation training (semester five).

Student workload

18 ECTS, which is 486 hours of student work.
This can be completed in 12 weeks, if working 40 hours / week.
If the working hours are less than 40 hrs / week, the practical training has to be completed within six (6) months.
The advanced practical training includes a development task (six credits).

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

PASS:

You conduct yourself appropriately and act responsibly, adhering to the values ​​and ethical principles of the sports industry. You adapt to the operating culture of the practical training place. You act self-directedly and with initiative, and you know how to develop the operating environment of your workplace. You realistically recognize your level of competence, critically evaluate your activities, and are capable of interactive feedback discussions. You master a developmental approach to work. You know how to apply the knowledge and skills already covered in your studies and know how to justify your activities theoretically. You know how to network with industry players. You know how to describe the key elements of safety at the practical training place.

FAIL:
The student fails to complete the agreed tasks at the practical training place. They do not demonstrate responsible conduct, or do not submit the required documentation within deadlines. The attainment of the course learning outcomes is insufficient.

Further information

In order to start the advanced practical training, 120 credits need to be studied and registered in Pakki (including orientation training). The student may not proceed to the advanced practical training directly after the orientation training (semester five).
