Objective

The student will be able to recognize clients / families/ communities as experts in their own life and as active agents within the service process.
They will be able to identify the clients' resources.
They will understand clients' needs within social and health services overall and can support them and their relatives in an empowering way.
The students will recognize the importance of culture within supervising and counseling clients and within social empowerment.

Content

The individual, family and community as clients, inclusion of the individual, family and community and the general methods of supporting inclusion, the significance and meanings of clients' experience, the significance of clients' life histories, habits and life situation in care, the impacts of health, illness and social problems on clients' life situations, resource based service provision, significance of cultural background when dealing and interacting with clients.

Location and time

The course will be conducted online from January 1, 2026, to April 30, 2026, and includes 2-4 hours of contact teaching at the Kajaani campus.

The learning assignments are scheduled in Reppu so that each assignment has its own due date. The final assignment and feedback for the course must be submitted by March 31, 2026

The course includes lectures, materials, and learning assignments in the Reppu online environment.

The course includes a group interview assignment, which can optionally be conducted in the workplace or during an internship.

Student workload

The course has a total workload of 54 hours, equivalent to 2 ECTS credits.

The course includes 2-4 hours of teaching and independent work in the Reppu learning environment from January 1 to April 30, 2026 (note that each learning assignment has its own due date / the course is scheduled in Reppu).

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

To pass the course, the student must successfully complete all the course assignments. A passing grade corresponds to a grade of good / 3
