Arviointimenetelmät ja arvioinnin perusteet

Student performance is assessed through active participation and successful completion of all required course components. Evaluation is based on:

Active participation in the project, documented through an hours diary. Passed/failed: Applied to the practical project or activity component.
Active engagement in lectures, discussions, and in-class activities
Passing the online test
Completion and presentation of two group tasks
Attendance requirement: Students must attend at least 80% of all contact sessions

60% or less attendance → course failed
Between 60–80% → maximum of a lower passing grade

Punctuality: Students must arrive on time; the door will be locked after 5 minutes

These components together determine the student’s final grade.
Passed/failed: Applied to the practical project or activity component.

Sisällön jaksotus

A detailed course progression plan will be shared with the students at the beginning of the course. Course sessions are announced in KAMK timetables and Tuudo.

Tavoitteet

The student understands the importance of nature-based tourism in Finland. They can name typical Finnish programme services and understands their relation to nature.
The course looks at nature-based programme services from different perspectives. The student can explain the connection between different types of tourism and nature.
The student experiences nature-based programme services and can therefore critically assess the suitability for certain customer groups.

Aika ja paikka

Classroom sessions that require in-person attendance during the autumn semester, from September through November.
Active participation in the implementation of a nature-based event or activity at the beginning of September.

Oppimateriaalit

All course materials will be provided in Reppu/Moodle, including lecture slides, instructions, and digital readings.
Additional case examples and videos related to nature-based tourism, well-being tourism, adventure tourism, sport tourism, cultural tourism, and slow tourism will be distributed throughout the course.
Materials from external partners or project organisations (e.g., Kainuun Liikunta) may be included.

No compulsory textbook; recommended supplementary literature:
Articles on Finnish nature-based tourism (provided in Reppu)
Selected chapters from tourism programme service development literature (provided as PDFs)

Opetusmenetelmät

The course relies on:

In-class teaching and thematic discussions
Workshops with small-group activities
Independent work focusing on analysing nature-based programme service examples
Practical participation in a nature-based project, event, or activity
Group work resulting in a presentation connected to one of the course themes
Reflective tasks based on the student’s own experiences with nature-based programme services

All materials will be available through Reppu/Moodle.

Harjoittelu- ja työelämäyhteistyö

The course includes hands‑on participation in an authentic nature-based tourism activity or project, building direct working‑life competence.
Earlier course versions included collaboration with Kainuun Liikunta’s Lost in Kainuu event, which remains a model for possible future partnerships.
Students gain insight into programme service production, safety, customer segmentation, and service suitability evaluation.
Local operators in Kainuu may provide case examples or project tasks.

Tenttien ajankohdat ja uusintamahdollisuudet

Exam: At the end of the course period (Week 41 or 43 ) — exact date announced in Reppu.
1st retake: Approximately 3–4 weeks after main exam (registration required 10 days prior).
2nd retake: Approximately 3–4 weeks after the first retake (registration required 10 days prior).
Exams may be completed in Reppu/Moodle under SEB (safe exam browser) conditions, following KAMK guidelines - changes possible

Kansainvälisyys

-Nature-based tourism is a globally significant field; examples and case studies from Nordic, European, and international destinations will be introduced.
-International students bring diverse perspectives regarding nature-tourism expectations, safety, and customer preferences.
-Global tourism themes (well-being tourism, slow tourism, cultural tourism) are integrated throughout the course content, reflecting international trends.
-No mandatory international mobility, but students may connect course tasks to international contexts.

Toteutuksen valinnaiset suoritustavat

This is a compulsory course.
Students who cannot participate in a project day or selected learning activities may complete an alternative, individually designed assignment upon agreement with the teacher.
All alternative options must be approved by the end of August.

Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus

The total workload for this 5 ECTS course is 135 hours (1 ECTS = 27 hours). The workload is divided across contact teaching, independent study, group work, presentation preparation, project participation, and exam preparation.
Workload distribution:

Contact teaching (lectures, workshops, in-class activities): approx. 30 hours
Independent study (readings, self-study tasks, weekly assignments): approx. 44,5 hours
Group work and preparation for presentations: approx. 27 hours
Project participation (nature-based activity): 20 hours (0.5 ECTS)
Exam preparation and exam: approx. 13.5 hours

A detailed weekly schedule, including the timing of lectures, project activities, self-study tasks, presentation deadlines, and exam dates, will be published in Reppu at the start of the course. Students are expected to manage their time so that all course components are completed by the deadlines.
