Objective

The student understands the functional and economic importance of materials in the manufacture, cost structure and use of products. The student knows the basic concepts of material engineering and learns to search for and find the necessary information and to apply this to the identification and selection of material, taking into account the requirements of the application. The course also explores the potential uses of materials, quality issues and the principles of material selection.

Execution methods

The course is completed either as a through in-person or distance education.

Accomplishment methods

Completion of the course consists of lectures, various exercise, different assignments, and independent study. The student compiles the exercises to be performed in the course into a single returned whole. A possible exam.

The student has gained basic knowledge of the basics of structural materials and is able to identify materials and make material choices. Tasks require more in-depth study of the topic and self-reflection.

Students have a good understanding of the basics of structural materials and master the identification of materials. The student is able to make material choices and is able to apply the studied things in assignments. The tasks have been carried out with high quality and the answers show familiarity with the topic and spontaneous reflection.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of structural materials, material identification and material choices and the factors that affect them, and are able to apply the lessons learned independently in assignments. The tasks have been carried out with high quality and the answers show familiarity with the topic and self-motivated and critical reflection.
