Evaluation methods and criteria

The course is graded on a Pass/Fail basis. A student passes the course by achieving at least 70% correct answers on the final exam.

For reporting purposes, a numerical grade is also given according to the following scale based on the percentage of points obtained on the final exam:

Over 70% → Grade 3

Over 80% → Grade 4

Over 90% → Grade 5

Content scheduling

The course is divided on the Reppu platform into different sections, which students may study and practise in any order they choose.

At the end of the course, students book a time for the final exam in accordance with the instructions provided on the Reppu course. Fulfilment of the learning objectives is verified by the final exam.

The duration of the final exam is 75 minutes.

Objective

Students will be proficient in and be able to use and apply the basic mathematics skills required in nursing.

Content

Review of basic mathematics topics Creation of mathematics skills for the purposes of pharmacotherapy.

Location and time

The course is designed to be completed remotely and at an individual pace.

Materials

All learning materials required to complete the course are available on the course’s Reppu platform. Additional information and practice can be obtained from textbooks on medication calculations. The Easy enrolment code required to join the course on the Reppu platform is provided to students when they register for KAMK-Start studies through the KAMK-Start “home base.”

Please note that the course materials are available only in Finnish.

Teaching methods

The course is designed to be completed mostly through independent study.

The course is divided into several sections, consisting of theoretical content with worked calculation examples. Each section includes practice exercises and their solutions to support independent learning. In addition, useful links are provided, including instructional videos to support practice.

The course includes a review section with a practice exam which are similar to the final exam, allowing students to revise and prepare for the final exam.

Completion alternatives

Credit transfer may be applied for if the student has completed an equivalent course (i.e. a mathematics course at a university of applied sciences or university level with a equivalent scope).

In such cases, students are still advised to verify their competence by taking the final exam, as calculators are not permitted during the final examination of this course.

Student workload

The course is worth 2 credits, where one credit corresponding to approximately 17 hours of student work.

The whole course therefore represents roughly 34 hours of independent study, including time spent on exercises and the final exam.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Students are able to demonstrate their proficiency in basic mathematics and to apply such proficiency to their studies and the requirements of working life using pharmaceutical mathematics. Their proficiency will be assessed by a final exam. The minimum requirement for passing the final exam is 70% of the total available points.
