Objective

The course will be partially integrated with the Nursing Documentation course
Finnish Language and Communication
The students will be able to work as required in various communication and interaction situations. They will master different types of speech situations and develop their written communication as a part of their professional skills. They will be proficient in referring to sources and can use their abilities to create texts.

Meeting and Negotiation Skills
Students will know meeting and negotiation procedures and can conduct the different tasks required in a meeting or negotiation.

Content

The course will be partially integrated with the Nursing Documentation course
Finnish Language and Communication:
Preparation for situations requiring speaking, delivering and anlysing a presentation, compiling and academic text and the features of a good document, use of source references and compiling a list of sources/bibliography in own writing

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Finnish Language and Communication:
The students understand the significance of language in creating and strengthening their professional identity and they are able to use language within their own professional sphere. The students actively and constructively seek feedback situations. They share their expertise with their community using appropriate methods and communication devices and are able to compile a presentation demonstrating their expertise. The students are able to reason in a variety of ways, effectively and as required by the situation. They are also able to question linguistic practices used in their community and strive to reformulate them if so needed. The students are able to refer to sources to form new, fresh thought and can reformulate scientific articles to suit the communication context. The students are able to seek the newest knowledge independently and with curiosity. The students are able to assess the work of specialists from an ethical and cultural prespective and to create a supportive atmosphere.

Meeting and Negotiation Skills:
The students use their expertise in meetings and negotiations and actively work for achieving an end result. They use various methods of communication creatively and promote a positive atmosphere. The students use various channels of communication as appropriate recording the items of the meetings concisely and clearly in the documents of the meeting. The student actively and constructively seeks to participate in feedback.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Finnish Language and Communication:
The students are able to list their weaknesses and strengths as communicators. They can assess the significance of their own work in the communication process and are able to accept and provide constructive feedback. The students understand the importance of language registers in their professional work. The students take the audience into consideration and use different communication tools in presentation situations. They are able to compile compact, unambiguous, descriptive and clearly written texts related to their field of study that take the reader into account. The students know the text formats of their organisation and they abide by these formats. The students use source texts concerning their field of study critically and in versatile ways as parts of their own texts and are able to combine the thoughts of the source texts with their own to form a stylistically cohesive and complete text.

Meeting and Negotiation Skills:
The students are able to justify their own opinions in meetings and negotiations taking other participants into account in interactive situations. They are able to maintain a positive atmosphere. The students are able to record the content of the meetings informatively and appropriately in the documents of the meetings.
The students are able to assess the impact of their own work in the communication process and can accept and give constructive feedback.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Finnish Language and Communication:
The students are aware of the impact of their own communication style in the communication process. They are able to compile professional texts for a given target group. The students are able to present topics concening their field of study and to provide examples during the presentation. They produce texts in accordance with academic style and appropriate accuracy. The students are able to differentiate between their own thought and something borrowed from a source. The students are able to compile a structurally sound, problem based text, however their source referencing is mechanical. The students are able to describe the impact of culture in a communication situation.

Meeting and Negotiation Skills:
The students know the most common interaction situations and channels of the organisation. They are able to work in meetings and negotiations and can compile basic documentations for meetings and negotiations according to a given template. The students are aware of the impact of their own communication style during the communication process.
