Concrete Structures, Laboratory WorkLaajuus (3 cr)
Code: TRAE006
Credits
3 op
Objective
Students will gain a sound knowledge of concrete engineering, concrete work and the manufacture of concrete structures, the ingredients of concrete, freshly mixed concrete and hardened concrete and the factors affecting the properties of concrete. Students will learn concrete proportioning, how to choose the correct ingredients to make the desired concrete mix, how to mix concrete and test freshly mixed concrete and also trial use of concrete.
Content
The course consists of laboratory exercises, calculation drills and lectures. The laboratory exercises consist of practical exercises and lab reports. Dry aggregate tests, casting and related quality control tests and test piece trials will be carried out in the laboratory. Additionally the functioning of a reinforced steel concrete structure will be studied by test loading a beam.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The students are able to find the correct proportions of ingredients to mix concrete and understand their impacts on the concrete mixture and the features of hardened concrete. They are able to conduct laboratory tests used to study rock material and concrete. The students complete all the lab exercises and compile excellent lab reports.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The students are able to find the correct proportions of ingredients to mix concrete and can explain the laboratory tests used to study rock material and concrete. The students complete all the lab exercises and compile lab reports.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The students are familiar with the principles of mixing concrete and can describe methods of testing study rock material and concrete in the laboratory. The students complete all the lab exercises to a satisfactory degree.
