Objective
- to design, implement and evaluate public health care that enhances the health and physical and mental capabilities of the elderly
- to evaluate the health, living conditions and life situation related risk factors increasing the service requirements of the elderly and to provide guidance in the use of available services
- to work with the elderly and their relatives/next-of-kin to make decisions promoting the health of the elderly and to safeguard a life lived with dignity
- Implement home nursing and health care.
Content
- Home care: home services and nursing
- Health checks and health promotion for the elderly, care and service plan
- Specific features of health counselling (e.g. exercise, nutrition, sexuality, sleep, advice on aging and chronic illness)
- Resource and physical and mental capability support, early support, inclusion and creating opportunities for participation
- Opportunities and use of wellbeing technology
- Supporting relatives/loved ones, challenging clients, e.g. abuse
- Rehabilitative approach to work with the elderly (e.g. clinics and home visits that are preventative, increase health, physical and mental capability and independent performance)

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The students know how to analyse, compare, combine and select information and can present alternative procedures. They are able to work independently, responsibly, with initiative and flexibly in every type of learning and operational environment. The students are proficient in selecting and critically assessing the techniques and models of public health nursing. They can work as part of a team promoting and developing the team's work.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The students are able to select appropriate procedures based on acquired knowledge and guidance. They are able to reflect upon and assess their own abilities and the practices of public health nursing. They can apply public health nursing practices as required. The students can work as members of teams to achieve the team's common goals. They can also justify their actions according to professional ethical principles.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The students are able to work in an appropriate manner though a certain amount of uncertainty is apparent. The students are able to work under supervision in different learning and operational environments using public health nursing practices as required. The students can work as a member of a team taking other members of the team into consideration. Their work complies with professional ethical principles.
Prerequisites
As a rule, previous basic, professional and alternative studies must be completed.
The student and supervisor will review the other recommendations in personal study plan discussions.
