Objective

The students will understand the basics of social pedagogy as well as key concepts. They will understand the importance of different stages of human life and culture for growth; They will know the formal and non-formal structures of learning and growth and their significance for good growth; different working methods that empower the client and inspire a sense of community; social pedagogical orientation in social services work and early childhood education and as part of the work and induction of a social services professional.

Formal and non-formal learning, social interaction, community, culture and education, inclusion, childhood and youth in life stages, working methods and social pedagogical activities activating individuals and groups, socio-cultural inspiration, small group pedagogy

Location and time

A student can choose to attend in-person instruction in either Kajaani or Kuusamo.

The in-person days are (attendance is part of the course completion):

Kajaani: September 12, 2024, from 8 AM to 4 PM, Nature hike with method exercises (arrival and equipment instructions will be specified closer to the date). If you have mobility restrictions, please contact the teacher in advance.

Kuusamo: September 18, 2024, from 8 AM to 4 PM, Nature hike with method exercises (arrival and equipment instructions will be specified closer to the date). If you have mobility restrictions, please contact the teacher in advance.

Materials

Required literature: Sosiaalipedagogiikka - kohti inhimillisempää yhteiskuntaa (Elina Nivala & Sanna Ryynänen 2022, ISBN 978- 952-345-013-4)

Editions from other years are also acceptable.

Teaching methods

In-person lessons: approx. 8 hours
Online studies: Various short assignments, a project related to social pedagogical activities as a pair/group task (assessment 0-5).

The course assignments can be completed independently during the summer. In-person lessons will be held in the fall.

Employer connections

The final project of the course is carried out in collaboration with a professional client.

Student workload

The course scope is 135 hours, equivalent to 5 ECTS credits.

Content scheduling

The course opens for independent study on June 1st.
Course completion focuses on early autumn, and the final project submission is on October 6, 2025.

Further information

The course covers the entire lifespan and is suitable as orientation studies for many different specializations. The final project should be related to your own specialization.

The course can also be freely chosen if your specialization is otherwise already full.

0 - 5

Assessment methods and criteria

The final project of the course is graded on a scale of 0-5.
The practical exercises/mandatory in-person lessons are assessed as pass/fail.
Independent assignments must be completed.

Further information

The course involves 135 hours of study.
10 hours of contact teaching: practical training / simulations / project
Online studies: various short tasks, individual assignment (assessment 0-5) and
team project linked to social pedagogy (assessment 0-5).

Course assignments can be completed independently already during the summer. In the fall, there are classroom lessons.
