General

Students of the Sports and Leisure Management degree will graduate as Bachelors of Sports Studies and can use the title sports instructor (UAS) and work as a sports professionals in training, planning and development. Students gain the expertise to provide sports instruction, exercise and sports related guidance and advice and to produce services for different types of customers and groups as well as to develop the field of sports and leisure in cooperation with others. Graduates will find employment in the service of municipalities, associations, companies and clubs or as independent entrepreneurs, without forgetting job markets abroad. The degree takes 3.5 years to complete and is worth 210 credits.

The studies consist of basic, professional and optional professional studies, free-choice studies, a thesis and practical training. Practical training can be completed in various public or private sports and exercise related environments e.g. Vuokatti Sports Institute or within Myötätuuli, Kajaani University of Applied Sciences own practical training place. Myötätuuli provides exercise and health services for customer groups and individuals from different age-groups.

The aim of the degree is that students will become sports and exercise experts. Such professional expertise is based on a multidisciplinary knowledge base, practical expertise and interaction skills. Sports Instructors (UAS) will be able to work independently in sports and exercise related tasks requiring expertise that include challenges such as health promoting exercise, activity tourism, entrepreneurship, sports leadership and communication. They will be proficient in managing and leading complex professional work or projects as well as being able to operate in multidisciplinary and multi-professional teams and networks. Students will understand the crucial role of exercise in forming and upholding the well-being of individuals and society.

Annual Themes – Study Progress Description

1st yr I study.
Students will form their concept of the field of sports and activity tourism and their profession.

2nd yr I act.
Students will plan, implement and assess sports and exercise and various supervised events for groups.

3rd yr I develop.
Students will independently develop the field of sports and activity tourism.

4th yr I apply.
Students will apply knowledge, skills and attitudes in the field of sports and activity tourism by networking with operators in the same field and other cooperation partners.

Description of Competences

Sports and exercise competence.
Students are proficient in the fundamental knowledge and skills of the most common forms of exercise and can apply them in the instruction of different target groups. They understand different forms of physical activity as tools and opportunities for developing motor skills, physical qualities, and self-expression. They are familiar with the basics of applied exercise.

Human wellbeing and health-promoting exercise competence.
The students know how physical training affects the body, the fundamentals of testing, and are able to plan training/coaching goal-oriented practice and coaching programs as well as health-promoting physical exercise. They are familiar with the factors affecting human growth, development, and behaviour. They will be competent to plan and instruct physical exercise to enhance health and mental and motor capability while also being able to work as an expert in the health enhancing impacts of exercise.

Sports and exercise related pedagogical (physical education) and didactics competence.
Students demonstrate the ability to use a variety of different goal oriented instruction and teaching methods with different target groups and operational environments. They can plan, execute and assess extensive modes and modules of physical education and use it for the benefit of supporting and promoting human growth and development as well as for educating. They are able to form their own teaching and learning concept as a sports instructor, based on their own values and knowledge.

Sports and exercise related social, leadership and entrepreneurial competence.
Students know the development trends of physical exercise and sports culture and services and can improve the status of physical exercise in society. They are able to work in a variety of expert and executive tasks in the field of physical activity and are familiar with the different opportunities of sports and exercise entrepreneurship possessing the ability to set up a business.
